PAKISTAN
Marie Lall has been working on Pakistan since 2003 when she started to teach at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She has expanded her research expertise in Pakistan to multiple sectors including foreign policy, geopolitics, energy security, regional security, national identity, citizenship, education and governance. She spends on average 5 month a year in the South Asian region.

From June to September 2022, Pakistan experienced one of the most catastrophic natural disasters in its history. An estimated 33 million people, half of them children, were affected (UNICEF, 2023, World Bank, 2023), with over 1,700 deaths and an estimated 8 million people displaced (Save the Children International, 2023). In the southeastern province of Sindh, 70% of the population was affected.
In February/ March 2024, Marie Lall led a Rapid Ethnographic Assessment (REA) with a team of 10 researchers in the flood-affected areas of Dadu, Mirpur Khas, Badin, and Qambar Shahdadkot in Sindh, Pakistan. This report details the findings.
She was responsible for convening and teaching introduction to International Relations (Pol 131). In addition, she conducted research on the concept of citizenship in Pakistan and the role of education in developing citizenship. Fieldwork conducted in government, private and philanthropic schools in the Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan, resulting in a co-authored book: Lall, M. and Saeed, T. (2019) Youth and the National Narrative Education, Terrorism and the Security State in Pakistan, Bloomsbury, London.
​Between 2015 and 2018 she was UCL’s Pro-Vice Provost for South Asia, linking UCL with a number of Pakistani HEIs including the Lahore University of Management Science.

In 2015 she conducted a review of CARE’s work in Lahore. This involved work in CARE schools as well as adopted government schools.
